Decking and Sustainability – What Homeowners Need to Know

Sustainability was a critical factor of home improvement in 2023 with a survey from The Business Standard revealing that 78% of respondents (10,281) believe environmental sustainability is important to them. This concept has grown over the years, leading consumers to be more motivated to lead more sustainable lives. Dino Decking has conducted its own recent survey to uncover the latest trends regarding decking and sustainability in 2024. The survey results highlight this trend showing that an overwhelming majority of homeowners consider sustainability to be a top priority. But what does this mean for you and how can you make the best choices for your deck? In this blog, we’ll dive into what homeowners need to know about decking and sustainability.

The Growing Demand for Sustainable Decking

Our survey revealed that 34.56% of respondents rated sustainability as “extremely important” when selecting decking materials, with a further 21.53% giving it a rating of 8 out of 10. This means over half of the respondents place a significant emphasis on the environmental impact of their decking choices. Only a small group, less than 10%, considered sustainability unimportant (ratings 0-4).

This shift towards sustainability is not just a passing trend with recent studies revealing 75% of potential home buyers want sustainable features. Homeowners are more eco-conscious with their attitudes towards sustainability reflected by the survey results these homeowners taking action in looking for ways to reduce their carbon footprint, and the materials they use for decking play a crucial role in this effort.

What Sustainable Decking Materials Are Homeowners Choosing?

When it comes to awareness of sustainable decking options, our survey showed that 76.63% of respondents are familiar with composite decking made from recycled wood and plastic, making it the most recognised sustainable material. Reclaimed wood followed with 46.03% awareness, and bamboo was known by 16.86% of respondents.

These materials are favoured for their durability, low maintenance, and reduced environmental impact:

  • Composite Decking (Recycled Wood & Plastic): Composite decking is popular because it combines recycled materials, reducing waste and the need for virgin resources. It’s also known for its longevity and low maintenance, making it a sustainable choice for long-term outdoor projects.
  • Reclaimed Wood: Reclaimed wood is another eco-friendly option, giving new life to old timber and reducing the demand for freshly cut trees. It also adds a rustic charm that many homeowners find appealing.
  • Bamboo: Bamboo is a rapidly renewable resource, growing much faster than traditional wood. It’s strong, durable, and increasingly popular as a sustainable decking material.

Why Sustainability Matters in Decking

Sustainable decking materials offer several benefits beyond their environmental impact. For one, they tend to be more durable and require less maintenance, saving homeowners time and money in the long run. Moreover, using sustainable materials can increase the value of your home, as more buyers are looking for eco-friendly features.

Richard King, an expert at Dino Decking, emphasises the importance of sustainability in decking: “Choosing sustainable decking materials is not just about being environmentally responsible it’s about investing in the future. Sustainable options like composite decking are designed to last longer, resist the elements better, and require less maintenance. This means homeowners can enjoy their outdoor spaces without the constant upkeep and with the peace of mind that they are making a positive impact on the environment.”

Making the Right Choice for Your Deck

When selecting decking materials, it’s important to consider not only the environmental impact but also the long-term benefits. Sustainable materials like composite decking, reclaimed wood, and bamboo offer durability, low maintenance, and a smaller carbon footprint.

As the demand for eco-friendly options continues to grow, so too does the range of available materials. Homeowners should research the options, consider their specific needs, and choose materials that align with their sustainability goals. By opting for sustainable decking options, homeowners can enjoy beautiful, durable outdoor spaces while also contributing to a healthier planet. With expert insights and growing awareness, it’s easier than ever to make informed, eco-friendly choices that benefit both your home and the environment.
