Steel Balustrade FAQs

What’s the difference between a handrail and balustrade?

If you’re installing a stainless steel or composite balustrade then planning permission isn’t necessary. However, if this installation is part of a bigger garden project, then the project as a whole may need it. Find out if your garden project requires planning permission or not.

Installing steel balustrade is best done by a professional due to the intricacies involved.

Step 1: Firstly, you’ll want to decide where your balustrade is going and, more importantly, assess whether the area is suitable. At this stage it’s also important to check the type of balustrade you have as each is installed differently.

Step 2: Mark out your panels to plan exactly where each post should be as getting this wrong can cause issues further down the line.

Step 3: Fix posts together with stainless steel screws to prevent rust and wear.

Step 4: Once all of your posts are in place, check them thoroughly and then tighten them together. This ensures they are all in line.

Step 5: If you’re using glass in your balustrade ensure you use clamps to fix them together firmly. After you’ve done this, gradually tighten the clamps ensuring not to go too tight.
